Gyu Nami inspired Gyudon

I didn't want to cook a simple steak with vegetables and some sort of carb so I was inspired by the Gyudon (beef bowl) by Gyu Nami to come up with this dish which can be easily replicated at home. But unlike Gyu Nami, I didn't use wagyu and it turned out really yummy so I reckon that you can use any type of beef, as long as it's meant for a steak or roast.

It's not a difficult dish to do but requires a bit of wash up because you will use several pots and pans to cook each part.

Ingredients:

  • 1 sirloin steak (about 150-200g)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup of rice of your choice (I used brown rice)
  • roasted seaweed
  • mayonnaise
  • sesame seed sauce
  • cracked black pepper
Method:
  1. Cook your rice as per instructions.
  2. Cook your steak 1 min per side for medium rare and a bit longer for medium to medium well. I do not suggest cooking this too thoroughly but again, this is up to you.
  3. Set your steak aside to rest and then slice it afterwards.
  4. Poach an egg in a separate pan. For instructions on how to poach an egg, click here.
  5. Put the rice as your base. Sprinkly the roasted seaweed on top. Place the sliced beef on top and drizzle the sesame seed sauce.
  6. Place the poached egg right at the top and then place a bit of mayonnaise on the top. Finally, sprinkle some freshly cracked black pepper on top.
