What do you eat after a yoga session that ends at 9.30pm? Why...you go for a late dinner at a nearby Thai restaurant that opens till late!
Welcome to my introduction to Thai Boat Noodles as served by Gu Thai Noodles in POMO. Why is it called Boat Noodles and do the noodles come in some fancy boat-like contraption? Nay.
Thai Boat Noodles are so-called because they were originally served from boats that traversed Bangkok's canals and that is also why the bowl is usually small, for the convenience and safety of the merchant as they were often one-person show; handling the paddling, cooking of the noodles and soup as well as serving the noodles.
The Boat Noodle is characterised by its dark soup colour, most likely due to the seasoning of dark soy sauce and contains cow or pig's blood. Not the blood cubes but from the meats. That's why the soup is thick and looks a bit scummy, unlike it's clear Vietnamese cousin.
Mixed Beef Boat Noodles with Bee Hoon (S$17.90)
From the photo above, it's quite obvious that I didn't order the more traditional small bowl which costs only S$1.90 each! They're really more like a snack-size but I was there for dinner so I ordered the normal sized bowl with a mix of beef slices, beef balls and kang kong. You can choose from a variety of noodles too - rice noodles, bee hoon, kway teow etc.
The spice level goes from 1-5 (non-spicy to extra spicy) and I opted for 2. Just in case. To ensure that there would be unnecessary trips to the fire station to put out my tongue, I also ordered their Thai Green Milk Tea (S$2.80). There was also an order of Oyster Omelette (S$10.80) to share.
Verdict? Spice 2 could use a little more kick, which I did by adding just a wee bit of dried chilli. It was really flavourful though and I finished the whole bowl without any complaints except for longing of more beef and a larger serving size.
I didn't care much about the omelette although it was nice and fluffy while the milk tea was just nice - milky without being overpoweringly sweet.
I can't wait to go back there again!
