Sing HK Cafe Tastes Like Home Food

By Sunday, January 31, 2016 , , , , , , , , , , ,

Dad read about Sing HK Cafe in the newspaper last Sunday and he decided to bring us there for dinner. Apparently, the writeup sang praises of their Sirloin Steak and Oxtail (served only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

Sing HK Cafe is what is commonly known as a cha chan teng in Hong Kong, which serves up Hong Kong styled western cuisine or kind of like a fusion between Western and Chinese. Interestingly enough, the air-conditioned area of the cafe is so small, narrow and cramped that I did feel like we're in Hong Kong except that the uncle who served us was uber friendly and spoke English.

Grilled Chicken Chop with rice and creamy corn sauce
Mum ordered their Grilled Chicken Chop with rice (S$11.80) and her choice of sauce was creamy corn. The other option was tomato. They did not skimp on the chicken and it was juicy and well cooked.

I ordered their Classic Beef Brisket on rice ($11.80) which was really tender to the point where it almost melted in your mouth. I loved how it came with a side of preserved vegetables and caramelised onions. The vegetables were a little too salty so I recommend mixing it all in with the gravy. Interestingly, it tasted quite home cooked. I do not think they used a lot of MSG or flavouring to bring out the goodness of the briskets. They were really hou sek!

Dad went with their Sirloin Steak ($18.90) and it was interesting that they served it all sliced up. As you can see, it was cooked as per ordered (medium rare) and came with sides of sliced tomatoes and mashed potatoes. The steak was really tender but it really tasted like all the steaks that I cooked at home! Oops. Dad was really happy with his mains and his only complaint was that the mash potato was cold.

We spotted a guitar and keyboard inside the cafe...so maybe the owners are really into music and possible jam sessions! Nonetheless, I'll sing to more meals here...if only it was a little more accessible from the main road.
