Geek Out on Supergreek

I have never been an ardent fan of Mediterranean cuisine or Greek food. The undoubtedly healthy combination of feta cheese, olive oil, tomatoes, raw salad greens and meaty kebabs simply does not appeal to my senses and taste buds. Especially since my personal palette is far more accustomed and acclimatized to spicy Asian culinary fares. As such, when the opportunity came to review Supergreek, I was admittingly not the least bit enthralled or excited.

I imagined that food fussy Singaporeans like myself would much prefer the robust and intense Asian flavours of Thai, Malay, or Indonesia cuisine. However, I was about to be proven wrong, as the lunchtime lines over at the newly opened Supergreek were consistently lengthy.

Supergreek is a brand new Greek fast-casual eatery concept, which just recently opened up their first branch in Singapore only a few months back. Their aim is to offer wholesome Greek cuisine, but in an affordable and accessible manner through a thoughtfully curated selection of souvlaki grain bowls, pita bread from Athens, feta cheese from Epiros, homemade dips, yoghurts, smoothies, and other related accompaniments.

One of their most outstanding hallmarks is the launch of an authentic freshly handmade classic Greek yoghurt that has been painstakingly strained a total of three times in a proprietary process that spans over 30 hours to remove the whey during the fermentation process. The result is a rich, creamy and fluffy texture without any typical sour taste. Ex-banker Mr Cheng Hsin Yao, who is the owner and founder of both Omakase Burger and Supergreek said, “Supergreek aims to obliterate the misconception that healthy, nutritious food is not just tasty, but incredibly tasty. Our goal is to provide nutrition-dense food that tastes so good that you will want to have it over and over again – three, four, maybe five times a week.”

Supergreek serves up a medley of eight different healthy, nourishing and tasty souvlaki grain bowls. Customers may also choose to enjoy these combinations within a traditional pita, or as a hearty salad instead. All grain bowls, salads and toasty pita wraps are assembled à la minute so as to retain maximum freshness and crunch. A popular dish and personal favourite of mine is the roasted dill marinated barramundi fillet grain bowl (S$12.90) that is light on the palate and served alongside a medley of salad greens, quinoa, arugula, broccoli, cauliflower, mashed potatoes, onions, cherry tomatoes, crunchy walnuts, Greek vinaigrette and homemade Parmigiano sauce that is simply delectable. Accompanying dips such as the yoghurt avocado, spicy harissa and traditional Greek hummus are made in small batches everyday so as to ensure freshness and consistency in both taste and texture.

While you are there, do yourself a favour and also try their homemade cucumber lemonade and power-packed protein smoothies (S$6 each) such as “The Chocolate Spartan” and “Hercules”. My personal favourite beverage at Supergreek has got to be “Mighty Mango” as it is reminiscent of a vintage Orange Julius (might you even be old enough to know and remember?) drink but healthier tasting and far less saccharinely sweet.

Understanding the competitiveness of this overly saturated market, Supergreek owner Cheng Hsin Yao added, “While Singapore has no shortage of grain bowl and salad options, the secret sauce as to why our bowls tastes so much better is because our food is grounded in the heritage and tradition of an authentic Greek culture. When you dine with us, you’re not just consuming a salad, you’re having a taste of a culture that’s been perfecting these recipes for more than a thousand years”.
